BEACON HILL

Beacon Hill A is the main transmitting station serving Torbay and the surrounding area with UHF television. It also had a VHF/FM Independent Local Radio transmitter installed for Devonair which went on the air on 12-Dec-1980 on 95.1 MHz. The aerials are typical of an IBA installation of this time: two vertical folded dipoles and two 'O' shaped horizontal folded dipoles to give the required mixed polarization, similar to Shilton. The frequency was changed to 96.4 MHz in the 1986 frequency re-allocations and the power increased to 1kW ERP in the 1990s. The transmitter now carries Gemini FM. Additionally the Classic Gold 954 kHz transmitter was relocated to Beacon Hill from Occombe in the late 1990's.

Below: Beacon Hill B. This mast is next to the main TV mast, and is where the BBC have chosen to install the aerials for the VHF/FM relay station. This relay uses vertical polarization for the four main BBC networks stations and, usefully, BBC Radio Devon is also relayed on 104.3 MHz, for listeners who cannot receive reliable signals from North Hessary Tor.
