Cwmafan TX is located just to the south of Pontrhydyfen, and happily there is a public byway that runs right past it, although it's a very narrow, steep, rocky, twisty track - and I wouldn't advise using it unless you have a very capable off-road vehicle!
The site is pretty much tree-locked, and recieves Wenvoe tv by means of a trough aerial and FM by a Band-II log periodic.
Unusually the relay transmits from a pair of vertically polarised trough antennas, one pointing at Cwnafan itself, the other at the town of Pontrhydyfen. FM is broadcast from a single dipole on the north face of the tower.
I wish I could give you a sense of the noise here - you can see how tall the trees are by the height of the recieve trough and satellite dish, but it's still very windy. There was a loud, eerie, almost etheral sound as the wind gusts and blows through the structure - could the wind be the reason for choosing troughs as TX arrays?
