DRUM HILL

| Drum Hill is located 4 miles north of Derby city centre. It can be seen just to the east of the A38 near Little Eaton. It is 156m ASL and the mast is approximately 30m high. BBC Radio Derby, 104.5MHz, relocated their 5.4kW transmitter from Sutton Coldfield to Drum Hill in October 1997, to give better coverage in Derby and Derbyshire, although reception is obviously now worse in the north West Midlands and south-east Staffordshire. When this site relocation occurred, the 10W Derby City relay on 94.2 was switched off as reception from Drum Hill, unlike Sutton, is more than adequate in the city centre. In October 2000 the FM transmitter of the local ILR station was then also transferred to Drum Hill, from Quarndon. The Drum Hill site is not only 16m higher than Quarndon, it also offers a much better aspect across Derby. The aerials are a little lower, however at 27m compared to 63m, which may explain why there has been a slight power increase from 600W to 920W. In February 2003 the new easy listening station, Saga (now Smooth) opened a low power, 190W, Derby 'filler' service from Drum Hill on 101.4, as the main 106.6 signal from Waltham is rather weak in Derby. |
