START POINT

Photos by Martin Watkins Page last updated: 2016-11-26

November 2016 - the replacement mast is nearly finished

Almost a year since an upper-level stay failed and the north mast had to be brought down, work is progressing well to bring its replacement into service, it looks as though there are only four 12 foot sections to go.

In the meantime the West Prawle site a few miles west of Start Point ensures that Radio 5 Live continues to be heard reasonably well over the south west of England.

Protective matting seems to be very much the vogue at the moment, particularly at ground-sodden sites like this.

It looks as though the mast base is of a new type of construction, with additional cradling arms running out, and then linked back via insulators. Difficult at this distance to be entirely sure how this new arrangement works.

Viewed from the causeway across Start Bay, the local skyline is nearly back to how it's been since 1939.
