BEDDINGHAM

James: The Beddingham NOW Sussex DAB transmitter has basically been attached to what appears to be a pretty "important" communications tower atop Beddingham Hill. Considering there is line of sight in virtually all directions for miles around it's surprising that there isn't more broadcast paraphernalia up there!

All the shots were taken from a little distance away at the end of what turned out to be a steep and occasionally treacherous track. I wasn't keen on leaving the car too far behind me as I was unsure of the legality of its presence there, hence the lack of close-ups. On full zoom it's quite easy to spot the 2 DAB aerials near the top of the right-hand tower, aimed in pretty much a southerly direction, with coverage centred on the town of Newhaven around 3 miles away.

Dan: As with Burton Down, this is a former "Home Office" site - it dates originally from the 1950s.

The "South Downs Way" long distance path links both sites, and at Beddingham runs straight past the compound. (I cheated and only had to walk from the car park at the West Firle end of the path

In reply to James: historically emergency services and broadcasters tended not to share sites - but I wonder if Beddingham is actually "too good" in terms of coverage to the south - see below

The DAB antennas are on the tower nearest the camera - and the equipment is in the green enclosure in the foreground

There are two pairs of phased dipoles - but the original planning application was for eight panels! Possibly the intention was for the site to be used by Digital One and the BBC, not just the local multiplex?

Update December 2015: Following a frequency change and addition of new sites including Heathfield and Truleigh Hill, the local multiplex also moved down the hill to Newhaven

Looking roughly south. The TV site at Newhaven was chosen for D1 and BBC DAB - with phased dipoles firing their power into the hillside

Quite why Beddingham was originally chosen over Newhaven, only for it to be moved a few years down the line is not clear.
