Farnley opened in 1947 with Third Programme on 1474 kHz. Frequency changed to 1546 kHz on 15th March 1950. On 2nd September 1972, Radio 3 closed being replaced with Radio Leeds on 1106 kHz. The frequency changes of 23rd November 1978 saw Radio Leeds frequency changed to 774 kHz. This frequency is now assigned to the Asian Network.

The Farnley Transmitter is accessed from Back Lane, which leaves the A58 at it's junction with the B6126 (Gildersome Lane).

The transmitter, mobile mast and their associated buildings can be viewed from the access gate on Back Lane and also from the roadside on Low Moor Side Lane, which is on the opposite side to the entrance gate.
