HARROP EDGE

Photos by Julian Hardstone Page last updated: 2011-05-05

The hilltop site above Stalybridge has an outstanding view of almost all of Greater Manchester, and the three masts and Amateur repeater are pretty busy - there is just the one broadcast installation which has been shoehorned in among the microwave dishes. A vertical folded dipole facing Ashton (and most of Manchester) sits adjacent to a microwave link panel, fed from a similar panel on the studio building in Ashton-under-Lyne. The surrounding metalwork will reduce the ERP in other directions

The location must rank highly, especially for a low-power installation, in offering line-of-sight 'views' from ground level of so many other broadcast tx. The top of the Holme Moss mast appears over the nearby moorside, Glossop, Manchester Tower and Saddleworth are all nearby, Winter Hill stands up in clear view at the far side of the former metropolitan county, and most of the ILR and Community Radio stations of the area are Line of Sight, with only Romiley hidden behind Werneth Low. I daresay many more tx must be LoS including Tottington, Allerton Park, Llangollen, Moel-y-Parc, The Wrekin, Llanddona...
