Ofcom data released under Freedom of Information requests gives the NGR of this self-help as ST358898 - this is Coldra Wood, just east of the Celtic Manor Resort Hotel and close to M4 junction 24
I visited without a proper camera but thought I'd still attempt to pinpoint the site. On reaching junction 24 it was apparent that the main Resort building towers above the surrounding area - it's just next to the Christchurch MF/FM/DAB site. The wooded area identified by the NGR is, however, is somewhat lower...
The Ofcom data says this was an analogue transposer of Wenove (5W erp) serving 80 households and operating on channels 22/28/25/32 but is now an active deflector (1W erp) carrying six multiplexes
A glance at the roof line of the building just as I was preparing to exit the M4 made me think "something up there?" I parked and wandered around in the woods for a bit whilst thinking it was an implausible location for a relay given the huge building on the hill above which was most likely to have created the need for a self-help
Driving round the Resort, however, proved inconclusive as it wasn't possible to get a sensible view of the roof - standard problem. I went to a nearby fast-food facility located just off the junction 24 roundabout and could see again (but not photograph effectively with my camera) what could well be two UHF transmit panels on the roof of the Hotel
A more realistic NGR would be ST355897 with the basic concept being to receive Wenvoe (from the west) and re-transmit to the area east of the Resort
There are plenty of images of the Celtic Manor Resort on-line and thanks to Geograph we have a "placeholder" until someone can go back and investigate further |
