THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
LUDDENDEN
Photos by Lee Goulding | Page last updated: 2024-10-02 |
This site is located on the northern side of Calderdale about 3 miles to the west of Halifax. It provides television services to Luddenden village, Luddenden Dean and some areas of Mytholmroyd all of which are just beyond the range of Emley Moor. The BBC FM services cover a wider area and are beamed toward Sowerby Bridge and along the Ryburn valley as far as Ripponden, though much of the Halifax area can receive them perfectly well. Photos 1 & 2 show the mast poking through the trees, photos 3 & 4 show the broadcast aerials including what I believe is the FM dipole, behind which sits a huge upright rectangular reflector. Photo 5 shows the yagi pointing towards Emley Moor. The television aerials appear to be highly directional, covering only the areas to the south & west of the mast. It provides no television service to Sowerby Bridge which is surprising as most of the residents of the south side of the town (from which Luddenden can clearly be seen) require large aerials to receive marginal signals from the Halifax relay. Despite living under a mile to the east of Luddenden I can receive only the FM services too. This site was quite tricky to photograph being surrounded by high trees and a large imposing fence; it was also a very sunny day. Luddenden was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service on 12-Oct-1979 to serve 1400 people. Channel 4 was added on 7-Nov-1986. BBC national and local FM radio entered service on 7-Sep-1992. |
