DSO and DAB - updated September 2011

The first group of photos are from Wayne's visit in June 2010. By then the main UHF antenna had been changed to a cylinder.

Wayne's latest photos from September 2011 show the addition of BBC DAB (in service 14 July 2011).

Below the cylinder we have (to the left) two pairs of crossed logs and (to the right) a further pair. These carried the out-of-group DTT multiplexes, pre-DSO. Multiplexes 1, 2, A & B.

Further down are two groups of log periodic antennas which provided the analogue source at various times. Pontypool received its feed from Blaenavon (a vertically polarised relay) rather than direct from Wenvoe - hence the VP logs. Around 2002/3 a second set of channels was brought into use at Blaenavon (Ch's 66, 68, 49 & ?), with a group of horizontally polarised logs aimed at Pontypool. The HP logs at this end were used to receive "Blaenavon Link". This was to alleviate CCI following the pre-DSO DTT channel changes at Ridge Hill which were a consequence of the Mendip pre-DSO DTT coverage equalisation changes. Ridge Hill pre-DSO DTT muxes 1, 2, A & B were all co-channel with Blaenavon.

Blaenavon Link was decommissioned at DSO as this site is now line fed.

Near the bottom, the VP Band II log is directed towards Blaenavon, the source for R.Cymru. The two HP yagis are on Ridge Hill which are the source for the main FM services.

The Band II array seems to use only three faces of the tower. Ofcom data confirms a significant null to the west.

The horizontal logs which received Blaenavon Link and below them the vertical logs which may still be used to receive Blaenavon itself.

Being SFN with Mynydd Machen must require both sites to take a satellite feed if the normal arrangements fail.
