Show historic services

Whitehead was originally a BBC landlord site which entered service during July 1980 to serve 1250 people. Channel 4 was added on 31-Oct-1986. DSO was during October 2012.

Your photographer wonders about the function of this of this little piece of kit... GPS perhaps?

Editor's note: GPS antennas were installed at a small number of sites where a higher than normal degree of frequency control was required. This would be the case if another site nearby used one or more of the same channels. Specifically at Whitehead this was to convert Channel 4, which was transmitted on ch67, to precision offset operation to mitigate the effects of increased levels of co-channel interference from BBC 2 Scotland from Sandale, prior to an 8dB increase in ERP of that service. BBC 2 Scotland from Sandale increased from 20 kW to 125 kW ERP on 2-May-2001. Channel 4 at Bellair was similarly modified for the same reason.
