PONTOP PIKE

Photos by Anne & Nigel J. Coote Page last updated: 2013-05-28

June 2010

These photos were taken whilst we were in Newcastle Upon Tyne for the weekend.

This is the first gate (that is often missed) from Pontop Pike Lane.

The Site Number.

This is when you see nearly all of the mast.

Above: UHF and DAB. Having not used the former Band I aperture to increase the Band II aperture height, installing DAB must have been a doddle. No need for interleaving here!

Nigel's fine-quality camera has allowed us to have a good look at the Band II aperture.

One of the guy rope anchors.

(Pontop Pike - according to Pawley - was built over disused mine workings. The design incorporated safeguards against the gradual subsidence that was to take place as the wooden pit props far underground rotted away. The stay tensions were frequently checked, but the movement was exactly as had been predicted and no unusual problems resulted.)
