THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

BALA

Photos by Peter Bigwood Page last updated: 2021-03-07

Bala was originally built by the ITA to bring 405-line ITV to the area. Transmissions on VHF channel 7 entered service on 26-July-1967 and closed in July 1984.

UHF transmissions on three channels commenced on 27th December 1974, with S4C available from the launch on 1st November 1982. DSO was on 28th October and 25th November 2009.

This picture of the Bala relay was taken by Peter back in 1967 when only ITV Wales on VHF
channel 7 was being transmitted. The aerials on the right of the tower were the receiving
the channel 11 transmissions from Moel-y-Parc.

The single panel on the right of this picture was a latter addition to the UHF Tx aerial
system at Bala. It provides a service in a northeasterly direction towards Sarnau and
Bethel and was added on 26-Aug-1987.
