RIDGE HILL

Photos by Martin Brown Page last updated: 2022-11-24

1986

Ridge Hill was originally built by the ITA to improve reception of 405-line ITV in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Hereford and the surrounding area. The transmitting aerial consisted of eight tiers of EMI full-wave band III dipole panels, giving a directional radiation pattern with the maximum ERP of 10 kW in a southeasterly direction. It entered service on 30-Jul-1968 on ch6 with vertical polarisation. Closed January 1983.

UHF TV commenced with BBC 1 & 2 on 11-Sep-1972. ITV from 26-Feb-1973 and Channel 4 from October 1983.

ILR Hereford (Radio Wyvern), launched on 4-Oct-1982 on 95.8 MHz. Frequency changed to 97.6 MHz on 6-May-1986.

Just the one picture taken in the summer of 1986 on a film camera. The only transmit aerials at this time are the UHF cylinder at the top and the ILR band II panels at 95m. The ITV band III aerials have been removed.
