The Lewsey Farm station was built by the IBA in the early 1980s to transmit Chiltern Radio on 828kHz to Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

At the time it was built, the site - near the M1 to the North of Luton - was virtually deserted, but since then it has been surrounded, on three sides at least, by a fully developed residential area.

The BBC also use the site to transmit Three Counties Radio (formerly BBC Radio Bedfordshire) on 630kHz.

Unusually, the site is not fenced off from the passing road.
Instead the base of the mast and the stay anchors are each fenced off individually

The building in the foreground houses the actual transmitters
and there is also evidence that it contains stand-by power generator as well.
