Pontop Pike is the main station which provides Newcastle and the County Durham area with television and network FM radio.

The first photo, above, was taken in or around 1980 and shows the mast with the UHF aerials at the top, the Band I (channel 5) aerials and the VHF radio cylinder/slot aerials below them.

Television and radio coverage in parts of Newcastle itself are supplemented by signals from the Fenham relay. Analogue Channel 5 and ILR are transmitted from Burnhope, which can be seen in the distance in the last of the photos here taken from Pontop Pike.
