Sandale is the BBC's main  transmitter covering Cumbria, the Lake District and parts of the England-Scotland Borders.

The region's FM radio services are broadcast from this site as well as the Scottish regional variants of BBC1 and BBC2. English regional variants come from the nearby site Arqiva site at Caldbeck

This photo - taken circa 1970 - shows the Sandale mast before the BBC1 Scotland extension was added.

Sandale radiated 405 line TV on Band I (BBC1 North) and Band III (BBC1 Scotland - at higher power).

As part of the UHF expansion BBC1 Scotland was added on ch22 in the late 1970s, the Band II was modernised after 405 line closure (mixed polarisation and Radio 1).

BBC2 Scotland came along in the early 1990s on ch67.
