Our first photo was taken prior to 1983 and shows the Band I and Band II antennas which were subsequently replaced by the Marconi Slant Polarised FM antennas.

The picture above was taken at some considerable distance - as the Isles of Scilly go! - but has responded well to enhancement. The site on St Mary's is known historically as Telegraph. The four slim masts were owned by Decca/Racal Navigation while the short tower with the microwave dishes are the property of BT. With the upgrade of the data provided to the GPS (Global Positioning System) by the US satellites the Decca masts became redundant and were demolished in Spring 2000. The close-up photo [left] clearly shows the FM and UHF 'trough' antannae which receive the off-air feeds for RBR from Redruth on the mainland.Since these were taken something interesting and unusual has happened here... it is now, effectively, "two towers in one". A few years ago a second cantilever-arm type structure was built inside the existing tower. I think this was done to take some of the loading of the telecom aerials off the main structure. The Telegraph structure is taller than the average run-of-the-mill type, and has to put up with some pretty severe weather. The double structure is quite evident in one of the photos below... |
