Comments: Ullapool is a TV and network FM relay of Eitshal

It was not a good day for photography, with low cloud and Scotch mist.

The approach to this site is very easy. Leave the main road just to the south of the village and follow the sign to The Braes. A steep narrow road climbs up through a hotch-potch of rather nice houses and eventually ends at the transmitter site. On a clear day I expect there would be a good view over the village, but I didn't get a chance to find out.

The receive aerials look towards Eitshal, and I think that the UHF signals are probably less than optimal. Later we camped at Broomfield near the pier, with clear line-of-sight to the transmitter. Reception from the Ullapool station was grainy (varying between the channels) and one channel had quite severe patterning. This was in the middle of the service area and only 3km from the mast, so I suspect that the transmitted quality is not good. I noticed that some of the locals were using masthead amplifiers very close to the transmitter. Maybe this was a futile attempt to clean up reception.
