Comments: Relay of Crystal Palace

Worlds End, London. The views are much better than the relay itself on this one!

Worlds End is an estate located between the north bank of the Thames and the Kings Road in London, and marks the western edge of Chelsea. There are seven tower blocks in the estate, the tallest of which is called Greaves
Tower (marked 1 on the map). It reaches to 20 floors, and it is on top of this that the television relay is located.

It's a simple low power two dipole affair with a log periodic receiving Crystal Palace which is due south.

Photography of this site proved rather difficult, as there is not a great deal to be seen from street level. Inevitably getting some good shots involved ascending to the top of the adjacent towers and poking the camera out of the staircase window. Of course, the window wasn't necessarily looking in the right direction, so I had to climb four of the blocks before I came across the right aspect! This was compounded by a plethora of door entry systems. However the views from the top are stunning, so it proved well worth it (and I need some exercise anway)

The service area seems to be to the west of the tower, and looking in that direction there are plenty of towers, gasometers and the Lots Road power station, all of which I am told cause a lot of ghosting and poor reception
of Crystal Palace in the area.

The view from the south bank on Battersea Bridge looking north towards Earls Court. Lots Road can be seen on the left,
with the relay located on the third tower from the right.

Close up of the same view. Relay on the second tower from the right.

Looking south along Edith Grove

Looking east - the RX antenna can just be made out attached to the railings on the right just below the dipoles.

Looking north, the view from the top of the adjacent Whistler Tower

As above, Earls Court exhibition centre can be seen in the distance on the left

Looking north east towards the BT tower

Looking west towards the service area. Lots Road power station on the left

Looking east, the Kings Road can be seen on the left, central London in the distance.

Again, looking East, central London and the City.
Visible are St Paul's Cathedral, the London Eye, Tower 42 (formerly the NatWest Building),
the Swiss Re Tower (The Gherkin), the Palace of Westminster, Millbank, Canary Wharf
and the River Thames with Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge on the far right.
