FORFAR

Photos by TCPD Page last updated: 2023-04-07

1985

Forfar was originally built for both BBC 405-line Television and BBC FM radio, entering service on 13-Jul-1964. 405-line BBC 1 closed in July 1984. There is a link to a BBC Research Department report about the 1964 installation at the foot of this page.

The HP band 2 antenna is visible, possibly the Band 1 transmitting system had been removed by then.

However the Band 1 receiving systems were still there. When these stations were built it was usual to have the receiving systems on a separate tower in order to get the required isolation between antennas.

The loops at the top of the tower are there to reduce the effect of precipitation interference, that is, noise on the picture caused by electrically charged raindrops. More information on the suppression of corona and precipitation-interference can be found on the links to BBC RD reports below.
