NEWHAVEN MCA

Photos by Dan Glover Page last updated: 2016-12-12

August 2011

"Temporarily mislaid" and found after five years, we present the Seahaven FM site at the Coastguard station on Fort Hill. The station entered service in December 2010.

(The "MCA" suffix to the site name is, of course, a reference to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.)

For obvious reasons the site is close to the shore - coverage is tailored through the use of phased dipoles about half way up the tower (20 m). The red array of dipoles at the top is for direction finding and the other dipoles on the sea-facing side of the tower are presumably for marine band communications.

Maximum ERP is on bearing 030 and it looks as though the boom supporting the dipoles is deliberately cranked to allow this whilst still mounting against the face of the tower. The Ofcom parameters show a null of 22 dB in the opposite direction.

The target service area is on the left rather than right.

Looking inland in the direction of maximum ERP. The two towers at Beddingham are apparent on the Downs.

The TV relay is about 1.2 km to the north west. Since December 2015 this has carried the local DAB multiplex, displaced from its original home at Beddingham.
