New DAB aerial system - May 2018

The BBC National DAB multiplex was added at Winterborne Stickland on the 26th September 2014 and it seems that the band III DAB aerials were replaced just prior to this. The Bournemouth DAB mux also had an ERP increase from 350 W to 1.2 kW at about the same time.

The new band III DAB aerials. Gone are the two tiers of two folded dipoles, replaced by 4, 5 element Yagis pointing roughly northwest, and 2 dipoles in front of a screen on the southeast side of the tower.

Also of note is the the UHF receive trough aerial has been replaced with a single vertical log periodic. Reception of the horizontally polarised analogue TV channels from Rowridge was very prone to fading during periods of enhanced tropospheric conditions. I understand that the use of the post DSO vertical TV signals from Rowridge has greatly improved reliability of reception.

On the day of my visit the tower was being jet washed, prior to being painted.
