The DAB Installation at Newcastle is part of the BBC's planned expansion of coverage and took place over three days in early November 2011. The work included installation of a a climable pole and associated safety equipment; new cabin, dish and gps antennas; new feeders and cable supports. Internal DSO conversion work was also carried out at Newcastle in November 2011, and at Camlough and Bellair. As a contractor to Arqiva we were lucky enough to be involved in the build. These photos show the work in progress as well as the completed installation.

It's an early and slightly damp start. The concrete base is ready for the cabin and materials are being unloaded.

The climable pole is in place as the "air work" continues...

...meanwhile at ground level the cabin is in place and the mount for the dish can be seen to the left.

Work continues up above...

...in this view we see the (unchanged) arrangements for UHF - a trough facing Divis and four panels for transmit.

The DAB array is four dipoles, installed on the new pole.

At ground level we see the (refurbished) cabin in place, complete with the new dish and GPS cones.

The dish is fitted with anti-ice heating: the grey box contains the controls for the heater supply.

BBC DAB entered service on 16th December 2011.
