BILSDALE MAST MAJOR FIRE
|
On Tuesday 10 August 2021 a major fire broke out in one of the buildings at the base of the mast at the
Bilsdale Transmitting Station. The fire spread up the feeder cables and
put all services from the mast including television, national and local radio for over 1 million people off-air. This also affected all of Bilsdale's
dependent relays.
Temporary services have now been rigged at alternate sites,
specifically at Eston
Nab, Arncliffe
Wood, Loftus,
Thirsk,
Kirkbymoorside,
Ripon,
Leyburn,
Masham,
Helmsley
and Northallerton. All of Bilsdale's dependent relays have had services restored as of 3 September.
A new tower has been constructed adjacent to the old mast base, restoring services to over 98% of the population. This will provide services on a temporary basis until
constrction of the new full height mast has been completed in early 2023.
For more information on the incident and its knock-on effects click
here. A new dedicated website has been
launched to publicise progress on the reconstruction effort: www.bilsdalemast.co.uk
