High above Prestatyn, Gwaenysgor is also home to a BT microwave site but was developed in the early 1950s as a RADAR facility (RAF Prestatyn). Developments, both political and technical, meant that it closed in 1958 but many of the buildings, including that now used by Arqiva, survive. The Prestatyn TV relay is just to the north - and somewhat lower down the hill. Unfortunately fairly poor light at the time of my visit - I'm not 100% convinced that this is the cause of slightly blurry photos.

Despite driving carefully I haven't yet seen an Araf...

Hand-written numbers don't last...and it probably needs to be a bilingual sign around these parts?

Seen from the main road - the Arqiva tower is on the right with a rather empty BT microwave tower on the left

The transmit antenna: Ofcom data has maximum ERP on bearing 225 A bit out of focus - but there's another view later

Thanks to the 1950s MoD the track to the site is of a good standard. In this view the transmit antenna is behind the structure

The building is apparently the VHF/UHF transmitter block from the RAF station. In the 1950s it was a wooden tower

I haven't yet worked out where this 3.5 element yagi is pointing - is this a relay of one of the other Real Radio sites? The site went on-air in December 2010 so the elements have not been kind to the elements...

The transmit antenna in better detail

Not much remains on this side of the BT microwave tower. There are photos from 2003 on the Subterranea Britannica web site - see link below

You don't see that very often...

It's actually a Royal Observer Corps post, built 1961, closed 1991 and now used by a PMR company with a small tower in the corner of the compound
