THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
COUNTISBURY
Photos by Mervyn Mugford | Page last updated: 2023-04-25 |
Since the first set of pictures of Countisbury from 1984, Channel 4 was added on 31-Jul-1987. The original channel allocation was 39/56/49/67. As channels 56 and 67 were to be allocated to interim DTT from Wenvoe, the channel line-up was changed at Countisbury to 39/66/49/68 in 1998. |
Countisbury is at the top of the famous Countisbury Hill and serves Lynton and Lynmouth. |
The building housing the equipment is the old coastguard station. |
The top half of the 17m pole snapped off during the Burns Day storm of 25th January 1990. Initially the service was restored with aerials attached to the remaining 7m stump. Certainly from this picture it looks very weather beaten! Even before that the station had ongoing problems with reception of the parent station Mendip due the distance, and the effect of the tides. NGW have tried to improve the off air system, hence the quad arrangement of log periodics, but the results were still unsatisfactory. |
Since these photos were taken the monopole and antennas have both been upgraded. For a time there was a single rx log at 3m AGL but this was only for test purposes. More recent photos from the site show that a 4-log array is still used for reception at this site. |
