PENMAEN RHOS

| Much of the North Wales coast is covered by Moel-y-Parc or Llandonna, bar a few coastal spots in the East who are too low down and receive Winter Hill. There are also a number of small valleys running south causing great problems for transmission. As you approach Colwyn Bay the hills rise up and four relays can be found to cover the area - Llandulas, Conwy, Penmaen Rhos and Mochdre. Penmaen Rhos is the main transmitter for Colwyn Bay perched high above the town to the East and unusually broadcasts horizontally polarised due to the high concentration of local relays. The nearby Mochdre transmitter also broadcasts locally on Group A at 2 Watt, but is shielded from the town by the North-South hills of the Conwy Valley. Most of the houses on the hilltop receive their TV direct from Moel-Y-Parc, as does the relay fed by 4 logs periodic aerials at the very top of the mast. Unlike Conwy, the coverage area is only to the North West and so Penmaen Rhos relies on 4 crossed logs pairs to provide the output situated directly below the receive feed. Near the bottom two horizontal logs [highlighted] which seem to be pointing towards Llandonna; possibly a backup feed in case of failure at Moel-Y-Parc. Penmaen Rhos was originally a BBC landlord site which entered service on 9-Mar-1983 as a relay of Llanddona with site number 118.02. The RBL was changed to Moel-y-Parc in 2000 due to Winter Hill interim DTT coverage equalisation. All five BBC FM radio services were added on 12-Mar-1993. |
