THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

CASTLEBAY

Photos by James Muir Page last updated: 2021-04-08

April 2007

I've just returned from a fabulous Easter hill-walking weekend on the remote and stunningly beautiful Isle of Barra in the Western Isles. In the process I managed to capture images of all three UHF tv relay stations on the island.

Castlebay, at the South end of the island, serves the main village on the island. Due to the local topography the only RBL available is from Glengorm on the Isle of Mull, which is just line-of-sight some 53 miles away over a sea-path. Arguably this has to be one of the most difficult and longest RBL feeds in the UK. Nevertheless, the transmitted pictures are excellent, and this is even more remarkable when you consider that Glengorm RBLs Torosay (also on the Isle of Mull), which is SHF-fed from South Knapdale, which in turn RBLs Black Hill which is 62 miles distant!

The transmitting aerials on the RHS at the top of the mast are radiating a low-powered signal to the township on the Isle of Vatersay some 2-3 miles away to the South.
