THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
BURTON DOWN
Photos by Peter Bigwood - additional information from Dan Glover | Page last updated: 2012-10-21 |
The original version of this page included a comment to say that the arrangement of two towers was likely to be for for VHF aircraft communications. However this is a typical "Home Office" site with a combination of omnidirectional antennas and point-to-point links. (A similar site now used for broadcasting is Beddingham.) Peter's photos must be pre-2003 - prior to the addition of DAB. At this time the police and fire VHF AM systems were still fully operational The BBC applied for planning permission in 1994, initially on a temporary basis. The intention is to serve the relatively small area of Sussex to the west of the site |
The BBC Sussex antennas are on the right-hand (northern) tower |
The transmit array consists of vertical dipoles - two are visible near the top, on the left hand side. The receive arrangement is two horizontally polarised logs, lower down on the right |
The dipoles are of the Marconi R8000 type - actually there are four, the other two are behind the structure in this view. The planning documents also include reference to screening bars - these can just be seen on the main structure |
The receive antennas, assumed to be directed towards Heathfield |
Interesting to see what they paint the masts with! I suppose as soon as all the UK masts are painted they have to start again... |
An interesting signpost at the site, said to be the prototype Euro design as prescribed in the very first Treaty of Rome! Apparently the ancient Brits painted out the distances given in leagues |
