BURTON DOWN

The DAB installation is on the left-hand (south) tower. Both structures are somewhat less crowded with most of of the VHF and UHF point-to-point links gone, along with the "turnstile" arrays at the top of each tower. There are, however, quite a few more SHF links on the north tower

Before looking at the DAB installation, here's an updated view of the north tower and the BBC Sussex antennas

Four dipoles in total - and more detail of the screening rods, as seen from behind...

...and from the "front" (western face)

Burton Down receives BBC Sussex from Heathfield on 104.5MHz The receive logs are closely spaced vertically and slightly offset horizontally. We understand this may assist rejection of 104.6MHz from Guildford

Equipment enclosures through the ages

This is the south tower: DAB comes from two separate arrays, each comprising two pairs of phased dipoles The small SHF dish (behind the large one) facing left, and the one slightly further up, facing right, may form part of the distribution arrangements - see below

At the very top the BBC, added in 2007. The lower array was added in 2003 for the local multiplex

Detail of the lower array - by following the cables it looks like each pair of dipoles connects to a separate feeder

The enclosure is shared by both services The "BBC" planning application included a satellite dish at 17m - but this doesn't seem to have been installed. The earlier planning application includes two SHF links at around 20m (facing The Trundle) and 16m (facing Findon) - this suggests some sort of distribution "ring" since The Trundle carries a different local multiplex - and neither has BBC DAB?

Although the structures are prominent, the ground-level equipment is well screened by trees

Looking roughly south - Bognor and then out to sea
