THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
BURGHEAD
Photos by Peter Bigwood Martin Briscoe | Page last updated: 2021-08-18 |
A couple of pictures of Burghead taken from down in Burghead itself last week (July 2015). A few details of the original Burghead building from Pevsner: Art Deco buildings by Wimperis, Simpson & Guthrie 1934 - 1936 with M T Tudsbury, BBC engineer. Demolished 1984. |
As at Westerglen, Burghead has four structures. On the left (east), is a 152m stayed mast which transmits the long wave service. Right is another 152m stayed mast which transmits both MF services. The third mast, left of centre, is shorter at only 76m. It provides a reserve aerial for the MF services. The small tower doesn't transmit any broadcast services. |
The most easterly mast which transmits Radio 4 on long wave. There are nine wires attached to the top forming an umbrella configuration. These wires are 180m long with an insulator half way down. The lower section is parafil rope. |
The MF mast. |
Martin passed through Burghead in July 2015. From the town the three masts are clearly visible, along with the much shorter square tower |
