Merthyr Tydfil Site Relocation - 1991

The original Merthyr Tydfil site became an obstacle to the open-cast mining operations in the area. British Coal estimated that if the station remained in-situ the resulting loss of revenue would be in the region of £1m, and they were therefore willing to pay the rebuilding cost. Therefore a replica site 50 metres away was built to allow mining to continue.

Merthyr Tydfil was originally a BBC landlord site built to serve about 32,000 people. BBC 2 entered service on
23-Jun-1969, BBC 1 in November 1972 and ITV on 22-Dec-1972. S4C was available from the launch on
1-Nov-1982. DSO was on 3rd and 31st March 2010.

The new site in the foreground has the self supporting cardioid whereas the old site had the 16" diameter structural GRP cylinder to support the antenna.
