MERTHYR TYDFIL
Photos by TCPD | Page last updated: 2024-08-13 |
The original Merthyr Tydfil site became an obstacle to the open-cast mining operations in the area. British Coal estimated that if the station remained in-situ the resulting loss of revenue would be in the region of £1m, and they were therefore willing to pay the rebuilding cost. Therefore a replica site 50 metres away was built to allow mining to continue. Merthyr Tydfil was originally a BBC landlord site built to serve about 32,000 people. BBC 2 entered service on 23-Jun-1969, BBC 1 in November 1972 and ITV on 22-Dec-1972. S4C was available from the launch on 1-Nov-1982. DSO was on 3rd and 31st March 2010. |
The new site in the foreground has the self supporting cardioid whereas the old site had the 16" diameter structural GRP cylinder to support the antenna. |
