BURNASTON LANE

Photos by Lee Mansfield, ATV and Bill Wright Page last updated: 2021-01-15

Updated July 2009

As Lee's photos show, the old Marconi "Tee" aerial st Burnaston Lane was replaced by a mast radiator in September 2003.

For many years the original Burnaston Lane "Tee" aerial suffered from transmission problems due to huge numbers of migrating birds perching on the horizontal wire. Although neither the birds nor the antenna are harmed by this, they changed the impedance match between the antenna and the transmitter and this caused the service to shut down frequently during the migration season. The change to a vertical mast radiator was the solution to this problem, but the birds now had to find somewhere else to perch.

The remaining photos on this page were taken in July 2009 by Bill Wright, who proves that often, with MF sites, the most intereting subjects to photograph are not the main structure but all the odd things around them!
