The Lewsey Farm station was built by the IBA for the Luton ILR service which launched on 15-Oct-1981 as Chiltern Radio on 828 kHz. At the time it was built, the site - near the M1 to the North of Luton - was virtually deserted, but since then it has been surrounded, on three sides at least, by a fully developed residential area. The BBC also use the site to transmit Three Counties Radio (formerly BBC Radio Bedfordshire) on 630kHz which launched on 24-Jun-1985.

Unusually, the site is not fenced off from the passing road.
Instead the base of the mast and the stay anchors are each fenced off individually

The building in the foreground houses the actual transmitters
and there is also evidence that it contains stand-by power generator as well.
