Band I and II site

A real bit of history - the original BBC Perth Band I/II site well hidden in a deep forest on the slopes of Kinnoull Hill overlooking the town of Perth.

Two completely different locations were eventually used to serve Perth with TV and radio. For UHF TV a new transmitter was built near the M90, and in the late 1980s another new site at Kirkton Mailer was selected when mixed polarisation for FM radio was introduced. With the closure of first the 405 line TV on 5th April 1982, and then the move of FM to Kirkton Mailer in March 1988, this site became redundant.

This original site was typical again of many of the early Band I sites having a wooden pole support and discrete location.

In the archive picture below we see the vertically polarised Band I tx aerial which used channel 4. Below are the four horizontally polarised dipoles used for the VHF radio services.

The receive aerials (RBL Kirk O'Shotts) were on a separate wooden pole.

BBC 1 went into service on 26th October 1964. FM radio services from 1st March 1965.

Below: Chris Ronald has visited the site recently to show us how it looks today...

I came across the original photo of this site on mb21 and got curious, so suggested to my wife that the next time we were in Perth we should go for a walk up Kinnoull Hill. She wasn’t as keen as me but we went anyway! To say it is heavily wooded is an understatement – the place is like a tropical rainforest. It is criss-crossed by paths – many them not on the map that Perth and Kinross council helpfully provide. There must be a few dog owners in Perth who know all these paths, but it was dead easy to get lost, and because of the density of the tree cover difficult to get your bearings as all you can see is trees!
