WOOLACOMBE

Photos by Steve Godfrey and Robert Webb Page last updated: 2019-06-10

Steve Godfrey writes:

Here are the photos of the Woolacombe mast. Sorry it was a bit misty the day we went out mast hunting. Typical.

According to published lists this relay bizarrely takes its feed from Redruth for ITV/Ch4; (but see note at foot of this page).

Below: it was a bit late in the day when Robert Webb visited but at least he had clearer weather...

August 2013: Martin Brown has made enquiries about the feed arrangements of Woolacombe and has added the following comments:

The commentary for the Woolacombe site (above) mentions it as being a relay of Redruth for ITV/CH4. This is due to an error in the BBC / ITC September 1997 Transmitting Stations booklet. The previous booklet (January 1994) correctly assigns ITV/CH4 as a relay of Huntshaw Cross.

Woolacombe was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service in December 1981 to serve 780 people. It was built as a relay of Caradon Hill with station number 131.09. Consequently, Channel 4 was available from the launch on 2-Nov-1982. The RBL for ITV and Ch4 was changed to Huntshaw Cross around 1993. BBC 1 & 2 were changed to RBL Huntshaw Cross on 2-Dec-2008, prior to DSO in July 2009.
