THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
SNAEFELL
Photos by Photos by Gary Seed and Douglas Mann | Page last updated: 2013-09-09 |
Snaefell is probably the most exposed site in the British Isles. Wind speeds recorded last week (January 2007) only days after the tower pics were taken) reached 112mph. As a result the Energy FM RX yagi (The bigger yagi with bent reflectors) parted company with the Tower! The station only used this as a standby feed anyway as the main feed comes in on the square flat panel above. Above the flat panel is 3FM's 3 el yagi. This is their only feed. I have included a pic of the 3FM TX (105.6MHz) This is the small rack on the one of the photos. The first three photos are from Gary, the rest from Mr Mann. |
There are two towers at the top of Snaefell |
This tower transmits all three FM radio services. |
About 200m to the northeast is another more substantial tower which was used by the BBC as a receive and link site for both BBC 405-line TV and FM radio. The BBC TV transmissions from Holme Moss on VHF ch2 and Sandale on VHF ch4 were received here and on-passed to both Douglas and Divis on UHF point-to-point links. (Both 641.25 MHz). The link to Divis was brought into use in November 1956 and replaced a GPO provided rebroadcast link of the ch3 transmissions from Kirk o'Shotts. |
