SNAEFELL

Photos by Photos by Gary Seed and Douglas Mann Page last updated: 2013-09-09

Earlier photos, including tx equipment

Snaefell is probably the most exposed site in the British Isles. Wind speeds recorded last week (January 2007) only days after the tower pics were taken) reached 112mph. As a result the Energy FM RX yagi (The bigger yagi with bent reflectors) parted company with the Tower!

The station only used this as a standby feed anyway as the main feed comes in on the square flat panel above.

Above the flat panel is 3FM's 3 el yagi. This is their only feed. I have included a pic of the 3FM TX (105.6MHz) This is the small rack on the one of the photos.

The first three photos are from Gary, the rest from Mr Mann.

There are two towers at the top of Snaefell

This tower transmits all three FM radio services.

About 200m to the northeast is another more substantial tower which was used by the BBC as a receive and link site for both BBC 405-line TV and FM radio. The BBC TV transmissions from Holme Moss on VHF ch2 and Sandale on VHF ch4 were received here and on-passed to both Douglas and Divis on UHF point-to-point links. (Both 641.25 MHz). The link to Divis was brought into use in November 1956 and replaced a GPO provided rebroadcast link of the ch3 transmissions from Kirk o'Shotts.
