THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

PLYMPTON

Photos by Martin Watkins Page last updated: 2013-12-02

December 2013

Woodland screens this site on many sides. Views of the north and west sides of the tower are very difficult unless one is familiar with the tracks in Hardwrick Wood (which I wasn't).

What is immediately noticeable is that the skew-fire UHF panels below the main cylinder have gone now that DSO is complete.

However it's possible to glean a lot of detail with a zoom lens. Here we see the ILR transmit aerials, still apparently the original RCA circular polarisation units; these are now scarce, in fact the only other example that may still be in place is at Foxhall Heath, although this hasn't been confirmed. Underneath them are the Marconi vertical polarisation dipoles used for the BBC services.

Below - the second tower houses the DAB aerials.
