ABERDARE

Photos by TCPD and Anthony Salmon Page last updated: 2023-10-05

1984 & 2006

Aberdare was originally a BBC landlord site which entered service with BBC 2 on 20-Nov-1967 to serve
51,000 people. BBC 1 was added in October 1972and ITV on 8-Dec-1972. S4C was available from the launch on 1-Nov-1982. Interim DTT entered service in the autumn of 1999. The UHF cylinder contains a south-west facing cardioid. DSO was on the 3rd and 31st March 2010.

BBC FM radio services were added in January 1986, with Radio's 1 & 4 from 10th December 1992. Radio Wales was added on 14-Dec-2001.

South-East Wales DAB entered service on 16th October 2001. BBC DAB from 28th February 2014.

Our first photo - from TCPD - was probably taken in about 1984 - before the FM services were added.

Bringing us up-to-date it would seem that the CCI sign has
been used for target practice, which is a bit harsh.

No doubt it will be replaced by some NGW signage in due course.

Adjacent to the tower there is mast which is an MF monopole providing the service of Valley Radio.

(This mast was subsequently removed, Valley Radio ceased broadcasting in 2009)
