CHURCHDOWN HILL

There are three masts on Churchdown Hill, the broadcast one and two mobile 'phone masts. The hill also boasts a church right at the top (hence the name!) and there's even a house next to the broadcast mast.

As for the antennas, the Digital One DAB aerials are on the pole right at the top.

The top set of crossed dipoles are for BBC Radio Gloucestershire and Severn Sound. The lower set (just on two sides of the mast) carry national BBC radio.

BBC DAB dipoles have only just been installed and are located within the upper crossed dipole set.

Channel 5 was also broadcast from the site.

405-line BBC 1 on VHF channel 1, and BBC FM radio entered service on 29th November 1965. BBC 1 closed on 6th January 1982.

ILR Gloucester and Cheltenham (Severn Sound) launched on 23rd October 1980 on 95.0 MHz. This frequency was changed to 102.4 MHz on 23rd October 1986.

In August 1983 the BBC national radio services were re-engineered to mixed polarisation aerials, and Radio 1 was added on 11th January 1994.

Radio Gloucestershire launched on 3rd October 1988.

Channel 5 launched on 30th March 1997 on UHF channel 48. Closed 20th April 2011.
