THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
FARNLEY
Photos by Daniel Baker | Page last updated: 2020-02-02 |
The Farnley Transmitter is accessed from Back Lane, which leaves the A58 at it's junction with the B6126 (Gildersome Lane). The transmitter, mobile mast and their associated buildings can be viewed from the access gate on Back Lane and also from the roadside on Low Moor Side Lane, which is on the opposite side to the entrance gate. |
Station history Farnley was built to replace a Group 'H' transmitter in Leeds, which had been used initially for the launch of the Third programme in September 1946. This was the first BBC unattended dual-transmitter station based on the use of duplicate transmitters remotely controlled from a nearby studio centre. 1-Dec-1947 Third Programme in service on 1474 kHz. 15-Mar-1950 Frequency changed to 1546 kHz. 2-Sep-1972 Radio 3 (1546 kHz), closed. Replaced by Radio Leeds on 1106 kHz. 23-Nov-1978 Frequency changed to 774 kHz. This frequency change was necessary because 1106 kHz was only 2 channels away from 1089 kHz which was about to be used for Radio 1 in the same area. 1-Jun-2021 Closed |
