THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

SHREWSBURY MF

Photos by Richard Lamont Page last updated: 2024-11-23

September 2005

The building looks like one of the 'DF' (deferred facilities) MF transmitters originally built during the 1950s and 1960s for use in the event of, and in the aftermath of, a nuclear strike.

[Ed]. Quite correct. This was originally a DF site which comprised of a single-wire Tee antenna suspended between two 33.5m Cubro and Scrutton masts. It was rebuilt with a single 61m mast radiator for local radio use in the 1980's.

BBC Radio Shropshire transmitted from this site from the launch on 23-Apr-1985. WABC (now Free Radio 80's), launched on 31-Dec-1990 on 1017 kHz. Radio Shropshire closed their 756 kHz MF service, during the summer of 1992. ILR closed on 30-Apr-2020.

The MF mast radiator is in a field behind the main brick building.

There's also a small tower in the compound which appears to be just for cellphones etc. There are no broadcast antennas visible on it.
