THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
SHREWSBURY MF
Photos by Richard Lamont | Page last updated: 2024-11-23 |
The building looks like one of the 'DF' (deferred facilities) MF transmitters originally built during the 1950s and 1960s for use in the event of, and in the aftermath of, a nuclear strike. [Ed]. Quite correct. This was originally a DF site which comprised of a single-wire Tee antenna suspended between two 33.5m Cubro and Scrutton masts. It was rebuilt with a single 61m mast radiator for local radio use in the 1980's. BBC Radio Shropshire transmitted from this site from the launch on 23-Apr-1985. WABC (now Free Radio 80's), launched on 31-Dec-1990 on 1017 kHz. Radio Shropshire closed their 756 kHz MF service, during the summer of 1992. ILR closed on 30-Apr-2020. The MF mast radiator is in a field behind the main brick building. There's also a small tower in the compound which appears to be just for cellphones etc. There are no broadcast antennas visible on it. |
