ALSAGERS BANK

Photos by Rob Shufflebotham and Alan Price Page last updated: 2022-12-21

January 2008 and June 2016

Rob: "Alsagers Bank is now the primary DAB site for N.Staffs/S.Cheshire, the new antenna can be seen at the very top.

It still carries BBC Stoke and Signal FM services, and is further populated with Vodafone and Mercury equipment."

BBC Radio Stoke launched on the 14-Mar-1968 on 94.9 MHz. This frequency was changed in 1970 to 94.6 MHz, ahead of the second phase of BBC local radio stations. The frequency was changed again on 6-Jul-1973 to
96.1 MHz, ahead of the launch of ILR.

From December 1982 the current slant polarised skeleton slot aerials, on a new tower, were brought into use. At the same time, Radio Stoke commenced stereo operation and the frequency was changed for a fourth time, back to 94.6 MHz, where it has remained ever since.

ILR Stoke-on-Trent (Signal Radio), launched on the 5th September 1983 on 104.3 MHz. This frequency was changed to 102.6 MHz on 4th February 1986.

DAB service dates are: BBC, 1st August 1997; Digital One, 17th August 1999; Stoke & Stafford, 20th April 2004; Sound Digital, 29th February 2016.

Alan: "I wanted to see if anything had changed at Alsagers Bank, because of the addition of Sound Digital, but there doesn't seem to be much difference since Rob's photos."

The following photos are from Alan's visit in June 2016

Site number is '140038'. This was formerly an NGW site, presumably originally established by the BBC.

No change here, the Marconi FM panels are still in use. According to Ofcom parameters, all DAB services come from the Alan Dick 'turnstile' antenna at the top of the tower.

Alan commented: "About 1/4 of the way up, there is a log periodic pointing towards The Wrekin, and an FM yagi pointing towards Llangollen. BBC Radio Stoke probably gets its RDS data from Llangollen, which in turn is a relay of Sutton Coldfield."

Editor's note: The Wrekin, however, is horizontally polarised...all may not be as it first seems?

There are two other towers close by and Mow Cop and Sutton Common are both visible in the distance...

(Feb 2024: We've had a report that the tower shown above has been removed in the last few months).

...the view over Stoke-on-Trent and beyond - transmissions from this site cover a very wide area.
