THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

HUTTON

Photos by Robert Whittaker Page last updated: 2023-12-30

3 April 2005

Hutton overlooks the lively seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare and lies at the western end of the Chew Valley. The Mendip Hills screen large parts of the valley from the main Mendip transmitter, as can be seen by the large gap to the east of Weston on the UHF coverage map on the Mendip page. Reception in this area is provided by the Ubley, Burrington and Hutton relays.

Hutton has two UHF panels pointing west which provide reception for the village of Hutton itself and the southern end of Weston. On the reverse side, four UHF panels send a signal east, covering Banwell, Sandford,
Churchill and on down the Chew valley until the Burrington relay takes over.

Hutton is also a BBC national FM filler, relaying Wenvoe to the Weston area. The single transmit log periodic antenna appears to service areas in the shadow of Worlebury Hill, which is to the north of the town.

Hutton also carries DAB services to Weston for the NOW Bristol & Bath multiplex.

Hutton was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service on 15-Dec-1978 to serve 14,500 people. Channel 4 was added in January 1984. BBC national FM radio entered service on 8-Jul-1993, Bristol local DAB from 30-Jan-2001 and Radio Bristol from 3-Dec-2007.

DSO was on 24-Mar and 7-Apr-2010.

At the top on the opposite side of the two UHF panels are another four UHF panels pointing east down the Chew Valley. Underneath can be seen the BBC radio VHF transmit antenna, a vertical log periodic pointing north west towards Weston.

Halfway down the tower are two vertical DAB transmit antennas pointing northwards.

On the left can be seen the horizontal UHF receive log periodic pointing east at Mendip.
