DARWEN

Photos by Malcolm Pritchard and Paul Martin Page last updated: 2024-01-13

Darwen was originally an ITA landlord site which entered service with BBC 2 on 25-Aug-1969 to serve 17,000 people. BBC 1 was added on 1-Jun-1970, ITV 1-Nov-1971 and Channel 4 in May 1984. The UHF cylinder contains a west facing cardioid. DSO was on 4-Nov and 2-Dec-2009. BBC national FM radio services were added on 28-Nov-1991.

Darwen is less than six miles NE of Winter Hill, but shielded by high moorland.

The first photo of Darwen (below) was taken in July 1982 by Malcolm Pritchard. The tower was not completely devoid of mobile radio antennas back then. There was a UHF array on the right leg. "I bet there's a bit more hung on it now" ...

Winter Hill 6 miles away.
