CWMAFAN

January 2010

The Cwmafan TX is located just to the south of Pontrhydyfen, and happily there is a public byway that runs right past it, although it's a very narrow, steep, rocky, twisty track - and I wouldn't advise using it unless you have a very capable off-road vehicle!

The site is pretty much tree-locked, and receives Wenvoe tv by means of a trough aerial and FM by a Band-II log periodic.

Unusually the relay transmits from a pair of vertically polarised trough antennas, one pointing at Cwmafan itself, the other at the town of Pontrhydyfen. FM is broadcast from a single dipole on the north face of the tower.

I wish I could give you a sense of the noise here - you can see how tall the trees are by the height of the receive trough and satellite dish, but it's still very windy. There was a loud, eerie, almost ethereal sound as the wind gusts and blows through the structure - could the wind be the reason for choosing troughs as TX arrays?

Cwmafan was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service with ITV on 16-Aug-1974 to serve 6,500 people. BBC 1 & 2 were added in November 1974 with S4C available from the 1-Nov-1982 launch. DSO was on 3 and 31-Mar-2010. BBC FM radio entered service on 19-Aug-1993.
