Earlier pictures and history

This is the 317.4m (1013ft) mast at Arfon, south of Caernarfon, N Wales. It transmitted analogue television (though not channel 5) and is also a medium power transmitter for Classic FM. No BBC radio.

Originally constructed for the ITA to bring 405 line ITV to North-West Wales, Arfon entered service on 9th November 1962 on VHF channel 10. It rebroadcasted the channel 8 transmissions received from Presely. Closed January 1984.

For UHF TV, Arfon was originally scheduled to be a main station, and would have been site number 144, transmitting at 100 kW ERP with horizontal polarisation. Transmitter listings from the early 1970's show Arfon being planned as a relay of Blaenplwyf, with site number 135.03. But when it finally entered service on 17th October 1975, it was as a relay of Llanddona with site number 118.06. S4C was available from the launch on 1st November 1982. DSO was on 21st October and 18th November 2009.

FM radio commenced with Classic FM on 16th November 1995. Champion 103 (103.0 MHz), from 11th December 1998. Real Radio (107.2 MHz), from 4th January 2011.

DAB service dates: Digital One, 18th July 2006; BBC, 11th September 2008; North Wales, 12th December 2014.
