THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
MOW COP

Rob: The site is located on top of a large hill known as Mow Cop, to the North of Stoke On Trent, home to a large folly. The hill is largely residential all the way up, and you can drive pretty much to the site. The views from here on a good day are spectacular. However, today wasn't a good day. Enclosed are a couple of panoramas - one to the East where no transmissions are radiated (would probably just about cover the edge of the Peak District) and one to the West, where you could see even further if it weren't for the low cloud! Although the 4 dipoles are attached to the west face of the pole, their stand off of about 1/2 wavelength produces the maximum ERP to be radiated north towards Congleton and south towards Stoke-on-Trent, filling in areas where Alsagers Bank can't reach - of which there are many. It appears that other areas that could be served from here simply aren't being! There are reasons I'm sure, but its choices like this that are hurting DAB. Adam: The site is on one of the most widely prominent and well known hills in the region, and the views from the top over Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire, and right into Wales and beyond are stunning. I presume that the DAB transmissions come from the stacked dipole array at the top of the most inaccessible mast of the three up there. The other two aren't broadcast, the larger of the two having a cabinet saying it's something to do with Vodafone communications. |
