SHILTON VHF

Photos by Mike Smith and Peter Bigwood Page last updated: 2020-12-01

The stayed mast was constructed for the IBA to transmit the ILR service for Coventry which launched on 23rd May 1980 on 1359 kHz and 95.9 MHz. The FM frequency was changed to 97.0 MHz on 10th July 1986 and the ERP increased from 500 W to 2 kW during 1988.

DAB aerials were added to the adjacent tower for the West Midlands regional multiplex, which entered service in 2001 and closed on 27th August 2013. The DAB aerials were then re-used for the Coventry local multiplex from 27th March 2015.

The mast acts as the MF/AM antenna while a sloping wire reflector provides some directionality to the south west. The VHF/FM transmissions originally came from the four tiers of circularly polarised loop and dipole aerials at the top of the mast.

These were the original VHF aerials but they have been changed, as you will see...

And here (above) are the DAB aerials on the tower.

When Peter Bigwood visited the site he had slightly better weather...
